GreedFall review and test

I was waiting for that game for a long time now so here is my Greedfall review!


Let’s first talk about the game and the story. It is an action role-playing game set in a fictional 17th century. A strange disease is killing people and you are sent on a new island, with your cousin, which is the new ambassador of your country on that island. This means that you will have to deal with the native of the island and also other colonial forces. Avoiding war or making war, being nice or not with people, you have the choice. And most importantly, discovering the mystery of the island.


What is the nice with Greedfall is that there are really different ways to play the game and that is clear from the start. You can decide to be brutal, and clear your path with violence (and killing people) or trying to discuss with people in a diplomatic way, or just sneak and stealth. Each of them having slightly different consequences in the game. There is also more than one way to finish a mission. For example, if you need to find a fugitive you can also decide to let him go, or arrest him or find an agreement with him.

The game feels more by itself as an adventure, in the way that you will talk to people, get a mission, go talk to other people and investigate a bit. The fight part is simple but nicely done. Basically one button for your primary weapon (probably a sword), one for your secondary (a gun), one to kick, another to parry, another to evade. You will also be able to use magic and put some traps. In the end, it gives a strange feeling because having only one button for the sword does not seems enough and repetitive but that is because you need to alternate with the other available skills. In the end, you will find your own strategy and fight will definitely be nice. They also happen way more during the night.

Story and universe

I do love that fictional 17th century with monsters. I love the clothes and the fact that having different clothes will change the way people act in front of you. Indeed having a coat from a faction will make that faction friendly with you. During the story, you will also have to tag with companions and be able to do a mission for and with them that will increase your reputation with them. In a general way, missions and the way you handle them will increase or decrease reputation with factions.

I have really enjoyed all the missions, however, I was expecting an open world and that is not the case. There are cities, which are really nicely made and very immersive by the way, but the way to travel between cities is either to pay some kind of cab, teleport or to walk. But walking actually means teleporting to a small area to another small area. It is as confusing to explain as to play. Basically the island is patches of little areas instead of being a whole land to visit. Well, that is just the way it is.

Like mentioned previously, there is a lot of different ways to do a mission or play the game, and that also come with a lot of different skills available. Each skill is actually important and you will definitely say “damn why didn’t I have that skill”.


I definitely recommend that game for all the fan of action-adventure games. The story is great, the mission too and I love the world where it takes place. It definitely has an Assassin’s Creed vibe. I am really hoping that sales will be good and that the studio will be able to give us more similar games!
