Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order by EA represent everything I do not like in a game. Which does not means that it is a bad game. First, because I know that some people like that kind of game and also because Respawn Entertainment did not miss by much.
In that game, you play as Cal Kestis, a Jedi which is first hiding then running and finally trying to fight back against the empire. And honestly, that is a bit weak. Considering the Star Wars universe I would have expected something a bit better. You will visit 5 planets during the game and I found none of them interesting. Land of grass and cliff, land of ice, desertic lands. The best parts are probably during feedback, and the end of the game, where you can both connect places and story with the Star Wars universe.
The game is an action-adventure, but I do not know if I would compare it to an Uncharted or Assassin’s Creed. Mostly because you never really have range weapons, and that is probably something missing. This means that you will have to find in close range, and thus spend a lot of time to try to find a place to gain life. And that is where the game gets a bit complicated.
You can carry with you only 2 vials of life. If you used them and went some back, you will have to find a place on the map where you can “meditate”. However, meditating also means that all the enemies on the map will respawn.
To be honest you will spend most of the game jumping, climbing and trying to understand where you need to go and what to do. And that is where lie another tiny issue in my opinion. Bugs will definitely not help you to know where to go or what to do. You may not be able to climb somewhere and believe it is not the right direction, but you were not at the right angle or having the right timing. And that does not include moment where you will get stuck or go through texture, or when a cut-scene is supposed to happen and never does. So you can’t be too early, neither too late but even if you are right on time, there is a chance that you fail.
The closest I can think of for the gameplay is the first Tomb Raider. Not that is exactly the same, but that it does not feel right, it is glitchy and either you will be able to live with it and enjoy the game, either you will just grumble every time something is wrong.
You will face multiple bosses in the game and if you do not like a game such as Dark Souls, you may not like them either. You may not have any problem with any enemies in the game and suddenly facing a boss that will make you go crazy They have massive life bars, hitting them to remove barely anything and you will have to learn by heart their movement, which will change over time. And again, I am not discussing the bugs, such as: if your enemy is preparing an attack then even if you touch them 10 times with your sword you will do 0 damages because .. well the boss is preparing so it can’t be touched, right? The good part of it is that it makes it very rewarding when you finally manage to beat a boss.
That review may sound very negative but Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is not so bad, mostly as I mentioned if you like the Tomb Raider kind of a game. But in my opinion, it is missing too many things to make an excellent game. The story should be a bit stronger, the maps should be a bit more interesting and gameplay should have a more rigorous quality check. I would actually be very happy to have another similar game with those tiny changes and adjustments that may be needed. The end of the game is also really amazing and just for that, I would recommend lot of people to play it (in easy mode) just to rush to the good part of the story.
